Proactive Pastoral Counseling: An Intrapersonal Approach for Cultivating Christian Formation
Rev. Dr. Kohen’s book, Proactive Pastoral Counseling: An Intrapersonal Approach for Cultivating Christian Formation, addresses the pressing spiritual challenges facing Christians and churches today, especially the decline of biblical literacy, spiritual leadership, and Scripture-centered discipleship within the body of Christ.
At the center of the book is the conviction that true healing and restoration do not begin with human wisdom, self-help methods, or cultural therapy, but with the living and active Word of God. Scripture is the source of truth, the means by which the Holy Spirit renews the mind, and the foundation for genuine Christian transformation.
Developed by Rev. Dr. Kohen, the Christian Integrative Therapeutic method—known as Proactive Pastoral Counseling (PPC)—incorporates the Christian Intrapersonal Formation (CIF) training program. CIF seeks to cultivate inner Christian formation by helping believers align their thoughts, attitudes, desires, and responses with the mind of Christ, as expressed in Philippians 2:1–5.
The CIF process follows a four-step biblical framework:
Identify the Problem
Seek Scripture
Apply Spiritual Application
Challenge Irrational Thinking with Biblical Truth
Through this process, believers are guided to bring their internal struggles before the authority of God’s Word. Rather than allowing fear, guilt, shame, anger, confusion, self-centeredness, cultural relativism, or distorted self-talk to shape their lives, they learn to submit their thoughts to Christ and be transformed by the renewing of the mind, as taught in Romans 12:2.
Rev. Dr. Kohen emphasizes that believers must learn to see themselves, their struggles, and their circumstances through God’s revealed truth. Healing begins when the heart and mind are brought under Scripture, where the Holy Spirit exposes what is false, strengthens what is weak, restores what is broken, and forms Christlike character within the believer.
In this way, CIF is not merely a counseling model; it is a discipleship process grounded in the power of God’s Word. It calls believers to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Christ. The goal is not simply coping, behavior modification, or emotional relief, but spiritual renewal, biblical thinking, and deeper conformity to Jesus Christ.
Key passages such as Romans 12:2, Hebrews 4:12, John 17:17, 2 Timothy 3:16–17, and 2 Corinthians 3:18 reinforce the central truth that God’s Word is sufficient to teach, correct, restore, sanctify, and equip God’s people for faithful living. Through Scripture, the Holy Spirit ministers truth to the inner person and leads believers toward lasting transformation.
Ultimately, Proactive Pastoral Counseling calls pastors, counselors, church leaders, and believers back to Christ-centered ministry rooted in Scripture. It urges the Church to resist secular patterns of thought and recover confidence in the power of God’s Word to heal, restore, renew, and transform lives.
The accompanying CIF workbook serves as a practical tool for individuals, small groups, churches, pastors, chaplains, pastoral counselors, and Christian leaders who desire to help others process internal conflict through Scripture and grow in a deeper walk with Christ.
